"Somewhere between installation, stage and sculpture, IΔO is an attempt to put on an exhibition of the psychedelic experience. Based on a new exploration of the cluster of artists active in France from the end of the 1960s onwards?, a multi-disciplinary curatorial team, in conjunction with the artist Lili Reynaud Dewar, combines an outstanding corpus of archives, objects and works with a busy program including films, concerts, encounters, and specific artists’ projects. Today, a new generation of artists is drawing from the springs of historical psychedelia and ushering in what has been called the third psychedelic revolution—the second one being the emergence of the electronic culture in the late 1980s. As of now, IΔO represents the first light ever shed on psychedelia as understood from the french context and its many international ramifications.
Based on the notion of experience – and experiment – IΔO proposes a three-month trip across the psychedelia of yesterday and today. A three-day festival, bringing together some 30 bands and encompassing screenings, readings and lectures, will open the event on November 28th 29th and 30th 2008 in the spectacular nave of the CAPC.
The term “psychedelic”, etymologically meaning “making clear, visible” or “freeing the mind”, appeared in the United States in the late 1950s to describe the effect of altered perception produced by certain psychotropic substances—the opening of the doors of perception.
IΔO, the name refer to the words of a song by the psychedelic rock band Gong, bases its approach on this one-off experience, at the crossroads of music, writing, poetry, happenings, art, film and TV, graphics, design, comics, independent press, and fashion. This methodology helps us, from an historical viewpoint, to reconfigure a network of historical relations within the art scene of the day, and, from a museum-based viewpoint, reconsider major experiences – and experiments – sometimes shunted to one side because they have left few material traces behind, as well as re-appraise a certain number of aesthetic projects regarded as part of the subculture."

"IΔO, entre installation, scène et sculpture, est une tentative d’exposition de l’expérience psychédélique. À partir d’une exploration inédite de la constellation d’artistes actifs en France à partir de la fin des années 1960, une équipe curatoriale pluridisciplinaire, en collaboration avec l’artiste Lili Reynaud Dewar, mêle à un corpus exceptionnel d’archives, d’objets et d’oeuvres un programme foisonnant croisant films, concerts, rencontres et projets spécifiques d’artistes.
Aujourd’hui, une nouvelle génération d’artistes puise aux sources du psychédélisme historique pour amener ce que l’on a pu appeler troisième révolution psychédélique – la deuxième étant l’émergence de la culture électronique à la fin des années 1980. IΔO constitue dès lors le premier éclairage jamais porté sur le psychédélisme entendu depuis le contexte français et ses nombreuses ramifications internationales. Se fondant sur la notion d’expérience, IΔO propose la traversée, trois mois durant, du psychédélisme d’hier et d’aujourd’hui. Un festival de trois jours, rassemblant près de trente formations musicales et associant projections, lectures et conférences inaugurent la manifestation les 28, 29 et 30 novembre 2008 dans la spectaculaire nef du CAPC.
Le terme «psychédélique», signifiant étymologiquement «rendre clair, visible» ou «libérer l’esprit» apparaît aux Etats-Unis dès la fin des années 1950 pour décrire l’effet d’altération de la perception que produisent certains psychotropes: l’ouverture des portes de la perception. De la modification de la conscience à la transformation des consciences, c’est au coeur des révoltes des années 60 que le terme est globalement diffusé. Dans l’ensemble des domaines de la culture, de multiples artistes tentent alors de restituer l’expérience psychédélique par différentes médiations. Or, si ces dernières années plusieurs manifestations ont pris le parti du contexte anglo-saxon, aucune ne s’était encore intéressée à la réalité de cette scène envisagée depuis la scène en France.
Ainsi IΔO, dont le nom est inspiré des paroles d’une chanson du groupe de rock psychédélique Gong, base son approche sur cette expérience singulière, aux confluences de la musique, de l’écriture et de la poésie et du happening, de l’art, du cinéma et de la télévision, du graphisme, du design, des comics, de la presse indépendante et de la mode. Cette méthodologie permet, d’un point de vue historique, de reconfigurer un réseau de relations historiques à l’intérieur de la scène artistique de l’époque, d’un point de vue muséal de reconsidérer des expériences majeures parfois laissées pour compte car elles n’ont laissé que peu de traces matérielles, ou encore de réévaluer un certain nombre de projets esthétiques considérés comme sous-culturels."
